5 Prizes People Want to Win

We are constantly asked by our clients what prizes people want to win. Here is a short list of what we know works to entice consumers to enter a sweepstakes or contest, and makes them happy to accept as a winner.

1. Cash and gift cards.

cash prizes entice entrantsCash is always king, with gift card requests coming in a close second. In reviewing our sweeps participation across all types of clients and all types of industries, a cash prize or gift card prize in a sweepstakes or contest consistently yields more entrants.

2. Electronics

At the end of 2013 one of our clients ran a promotion asking people to make their ultimate wish list for the holidays. All items in the top 10 were electronics. We use the the insights from that promotion as a guide when asked what electronics people want as prizes.

This year, we expect to see a lot of repeat items on the list, and a few other items like the new Amazon Fire Phone, Android wearables and Beats by Dre headphones.

3. Trips

Trip to Hawaii sweepsWith the current cost of travel, it is fairly obvious why travel prizes are popular. The “dream” vacation may not be attainable for many families unless they win it. The most popular prize destinations we see are cruises, Disney/Florida and Hawaii. One tip: a prize trip should cover travel to the destination and some incidentals. Not many consumers will want to accept your prize of two cruise tickets if you don’t also throw in the airfare and hotel to get them there. Check out our post on reasonable domestic trips your customers may want to win.

4. Cars

5. Free Product or Services

Just make sure the prize is a real prize and not a coupon with purchase (because that isn’t a real prize!)
