The Challenge
- Motivate customers to transfer money to the Philippines from the United States.
- Leverage a promotional tie-in celebrating Philippine traditions during their holiday season.
The Solution
- Create excitement and generate money transfer activity by leveraging the Philippine tradition of sending gifts to family members overseas for the holidays.
- In keeping with its tradition, Western Union launched the sweepstakes for the Christmas season, offering hundreds of Padala boxes as prizes. Padala boxes are traditional packages Philippine families put together for their relatives overseas that contain various items such as toiletries, household items, chocolates, and canned foods.
- Each time customers transferred money to the Philippines from the United States, or sent in an alternate means of entry, they were automatically entered into the Sweepstakes drawing. The promotion was presented in-language and ran for two months during the holiday season.
- At the end of the promotion, 325 winners were chosen in a random drawing. Each winner received a traditional Padala box in their prize level and a check to help pay for shipping fees to send the boxes overseas to their loved ones. Total estimated value of all prizes offered: $77,360.
- MK administered the program and was able to locate all of the traditional items required to fill the Padala boxes. Every box included a check and a personalized Christmas card (in-language).
The Results
- More than half a million qualified entries received during the promotional period.
- Stable growth rate reported. Good feedback from its Philippine customers.
