Best Practices for Running a Pet-Themed Promotion

When running a pet-themed promotion, you are tapping into a deeply emotional space. For many, pets are family members, and the stakes for health and safety are much higher than a standard giveaway.

Here are the essential do’s and don’ts for a successful and ethical pet promotion:

The Do’s: Focusing on Health and Safety

  • DO prioritize safety standards. Ensure any physical prizes (toys, treats, or gear) meet rigorous safety certifications. Avoid items with small parts that could be choking hazards or materials that aren’t “pet-safe.”
  • DO include a “Consult Your Vet” disclaimer. If the prize involves food, supplements, or new health tech, explicitly state that winners should consult their veterinarian before introducing the prize to their pet’s routine.
  • DO verify product ingredients. If giving away treats or food, ensure they are free from common allergens and high-risk ingredients. Providing a full ingredient list on the promotion page builds immediate trust.
  • DO offer “Size-Appropriate” options. A Great Dane cannot use a bed designed for a Chihuahua. Ensure your prize structure allows the winner to select a size or formula that actually fits their specific animal.

The Don’ts: Avoiding Legal and Ethical Pitfalls

  • DON’T offer live animals as prizes. This is widely considered unethical and is actually illegal in many jurisdictions. A pet is a lifetime commitment, not a “prize” to be won on a whim.
  • DON’T ignore specialized needs. Avoid “one-size-fits-all” health prizes. For example, if giving away a grooming package, ensure it can be adapted for pets with sensitive skin or specific medical conditions.
  • DON’T forget the “Human” side of the prize. While the pet gets the toy, the human has to deal with the logistics. Don’t offer prizes that are prohibitively expensive to ship or require professional installation without covering those costs.
  • DON’T use “Before and After” health claims. Avoid promising that a prize will “cure” a condition. Stick to “wellness” and “support” language to remain compliant with advertising standards and avoid misleading owners.
  • DON’T overlook local regulations. Some regions have specific rules regarding “animal-related” commerce and promotions. Always check with a specialized agency (like Marden-Kane) if the prize value is high.

Leverage the Love

Knowing that pet-themed promotions can pull at the heartstrings, it’s an easy ask to involve pet owners in providing user-generated content (UGC). Pet owners love showing off their animals and many will look for any excuse to do so. Photo or video entry “contests” usually see much higher engagement rates than simple “sweepstakes” entry forms, both in entries as well as spectators. It’s a win-win for your brand.

A Note on Sensitivity

Because pets eventually face health challenges or surgeries, it is important to keep the tone of your promotion upbeat and supportive. If you are asking for “pet stories” as part of an entry, be prepared to moderate content that might be emotionally heavy, ensuring the community space remains a positive experience for all participants.

We at Marden-Kane are pet-lovers ourselves, but also have the experience and insight to provide the guidance necessary to make your pet promotion successful and compliant, whether it’s just a sweepstakes or a full-fledged contest.
