How the High Cost of Gas Affects Your Promotional Offers

High gas prices have driven a shift in consumer behavior and marketing tactics. Americans are driving less and changing vacation plans, leading companies to reallocate marketing budgets toward digital giveaways. Sweepstakes now increasingly focus on offering “free” gas money and food to attract cash-strapped consumers.

The current combination of higher fuel costs, inflation, and restricted traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed the national average for regular gasoline to around $4.50 a gallon. This has had several specific effects on sweepstakes and promotional campaigns:

  • Rise of Gas-Focused Giveaways: Brands are utilizing consumer reliance on fuel by launching sweepstakes that directly target pain points at the pump. For instance, major road-trip chains like Cracker Barrel have rolled out major promotions—such as awarding $250,000 in free food and cash for gasoline to draw in app users.
  • Shift to Digital Entries: With a high percentage of Americans trying to limit daily driving and reduce household expenses, brands are pivoting away from in-person, location-based sweepstakes. Instead, entries are now largely digital—encouraging consumers to engage via smartphone apps or social media without leaving home.
  • Partnering with Retail Gas Chains: Fuel rewards partnerships have become highly sought-after. Brands are collaborating with convenience chains like 7-Eleven, which has used point-of-sale sweepstakes and reward programs (e.g., offering $0.50 a gallon discounts on the 7th and 11th of each month) to drive foot traffic.
  • Decline in Travel-Based Prizes: Sweepstakes offering grand prizes like cross-country road trips or flyaway vacations have seen a shift. Because airfares and lodging costs have spiked alongside jet fuel and diesel prices, promoters are increasingly opting for cash equivalents or localized prizes that do not require extensive or expensive travel to redeem.

To lessen the burden of high gas prices, you can implement gas card sweepstakes that leverage social media engagement, purchase incentives, and community partnerships. Some Engagement Based Sweepstakes ideas include “Tank You Tuesday” and “Fuel Your Road Trip” social media giveaways. These ideas focus on building a community while offering direct relief through gas cards.

  • “Tank You Tuesday”: A recurring weekly giveaway where followers enter by commenting “Tank You,” sharing the post, and following the page.
  • Photo Entry Contests: Encourage participants to post a picture of their current fuel level—whether full or empty—to enter a random drawing for a $10–$100 gas card.

We have many more ideas that we can share with you that include Purchase & Action-Linked Giveaways that can tie entries to specific actions that benefit both the sponsor and the consumer; as well as Strategic Partnerships and Stacking which can maximize the value of gas cards by combining sweepstakes with your existing loyalty and rewards programs.
